What is T-Shirt fabric?

T-shirt fabric is any fabric that can be used to design and make everyday tees. The type of material you choose can affect many factors; the thickness, warmth, durability, style, as well as the way it fits your form or drapes naturally.

Lighter fabrics such as Jersey 130gsm are ideal for Spring and Summer garments, where you need the breathability and moisture wicking properties. Thicker t-shirt material like Chunky Knit Rib are perfect Winter warmers, retaining heat whilst still exuding character and distinction. T-shirt fabric can range from form fitting Lycra to fabrics such as the Boston Pique Knit, that drapes well with slight transparency. From casual polo tops, to t-shirts designed for exercise, ensure you consider the properties of each individual t-shirt material to get the best results.

Popular T-Shirt fabrics include

  • Jersey
  • Knitted Rib
  • Lycra
  • Scuba
  • Pique Knit

How is it manufactured?

Each individual t-shirt fabric is manufactured in its own way, consisting of different fibres, yarn thickness and a knitted or woven construction. These will all determine the look and feel of your finished t-shirt; whether it’s lightweight, heat retaining, form fitting or has degrees of transparency. T-shirt fabric that has a higher percentage of polyester will result in a more ‘sportier’ top, and textiles with a smaller polyester count are less prone to wrinkles.

Many materials used for making t-shirts will be constructed to suit the desired end usage, such as whether it’s to be worn in the summer or winter. Closed knits and tight weaves produce a warmer tee, whereas more open weaves like the Boston Pique Knit are cooling, allowing air to enter and escape.

Purpose of T-Shirt fabric

The main purpose of t-shirt fabric is to make a variety of tops, including everyday tees, smarter polo shirts, vests and exercise tops. T-shirts should be comfortable above anything else, as they’re a daily wardrobe essential, but also stylish with personality and character. For exercise tops, you’d want something stretchy, form fitting and moisture wicking, but for an everyday t-shirt you’d want something a little more relaxed.

Properties

Because there are so many different choices when it comes to T-Shirt fabric, there are also many properties associated with them. Here are just a few favourites:

  • Soft – t-shirt fabric is worn close to the skin, so it’s essential that it feels comfortable and doesn’t irritate.
  • Elastic – allowing you to move freely, t-shirt materials have some degree of stretch, whether it’s in the warp, weft, bias or 4-way stretch like Lycra.
  • Breathable – more open constructions where there’s space between the interlocking yarns creates tiny holes that allow air to escape and enter, helping to regulate body temperature.
  • Moisture wicking – this is where the fabric is constructed of fine threads in a capillary style network, that transport moisture away from the skin to the surface of the material. The larger surface area allows for more water absorption and quicker evaporation, leading to a quick dry fabric.

Advantages of T-Shirt fabric

T-shirt fabric is soft, comfortable, easy to care for and designed to allow the skin to breathe. This makes them suitable for all weather types, meaning they can be a staple wardrobe garment all year round. T-shirt material is also easy to work with, allowing you to create beautiful tops for any occasion. Choose a textile to suit your desired end usage, and enjoy designing your own for total unique style.
