Clan Menzies is of Norman origin. The clan's history dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries, with significant mentions in early charters. Robert de Menyers was the Lord High Chamberlain in 1249. His son Alexander held lands in Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire, and Weem and Aberfeldy in Perthshire. Alexander's son Robert inherited these lands, while his other son Thomas inherited Fortingall. The Menzies clan supported Robert the Bruce during the Battle of Bannockburn, for which they were rewarded with several land charters. David Menzies became the Governor of Orkney and Shetland under the King of Norway in 1423. In 1487, Sir Robert de Mengues was granted land that formed the barony of Menzies.
