Clan Macnaughton is an ancient Scottish clan with its origins tied to Nacton Mòr, who is believed to have died in the 10th century. The clan's name, in Gaelic, means "son of the pure one." In the 12th century, Malcolm IV moved the Macnaughton's from the Province of Moray to Crown lands in Strathtay, Perthshire. By the 13th century, the clan held lands around Loch Awe and Loch Fyne. In 1267, Alexander III appointed Gilchrist Macnaughton and his heirs as keepers of the castle of Fraoch Eilean on Loch Awe.
